FAQs What makes Bikram Yoga so special?Students are guided by certified Bikram Yoga teachers through 26 selected positions in a preestablished order and in a room heated to 38-40° Celsius (100-105° Fahrenheit). In 90 minutes, this series activates all bodily systems and organs in terms of strength, flexibility and balance, for the sole purpose of making or keeping us healthy. Mental and spiritual benefits, in terms of concentration, stress reduction and self-discovery, proceed of their own accord. Why the heated room? This allows for both an effective and gentle workout of the muscles and tendons, thus reducing the risk of injury. Sweating facilitates detoxification. The heat activates the circulation, improves the body's condition and acts as a catalyst to accelerate biochemical reactions within the body. Can I practice this type of yoga if I'm very inflexible or unathletic? It's never too late: You're never too old, too sick, too bad or too inflexible to begin -- this is precisely what yoga is designed to change. What if my blood pressure is too low or too high? Yoga balances both conditions in the near-term and in the long run. If the heat makes you dizzy, simply take a break and join in again when you're ready. The blood pressure is balanced through systematic activation of the organs -- in this case the kidneys in particular -- through stretching and compression. What if I had a spine, knee or shoulder injury? It's vital only to go so far into the positions as feels good. That way, the consequences of such injuries will change for the better, since all exercises are basic movements -- primarily forwards and backwards bending. Thus, everyone is able to perform the exercises at his or her individual level, and everyone receives the same benefits. Take a look at the "Testimonials" link on the main Bikram Yoga website, where Bikram practitioners describe all sorts of positive changes for the most varied symptoms. |
